Cyprus is the third-largest and third-most populous island in the Mediterranean. It is east of Greece, north of Egypt, south of Turkey, and west of Lebanon and Syria. Its capital and largest city is Nicosia. The northeast portion of the island is de facto governed by the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Cyprus is sinds 2004 lid van de Europese Unie . In 1974 probeerde Griekenland het eiland in te lijven middels een staatsgreep in Cyprus. Als tegenreactie lanceerde Turkije een invasie in het noorden om de Turks-Cypriotische gemeenschap te beschermen. Sinds 1983 noemt dit deel zich de Turkse Republiek Noord-Cyprus.
Nicosia (Grieks: Λευκωσία, Levkosía, Turks: Lefkoşa) is de hoofdstad van Cyprus, gelegen aan de rivier de Pedieos en met een inwoneraantal van 309.500 (2001-2005). Nicosia is sinds 1975 een verdeelde plaats. Het zuidelijke deel behoort tot Grieks Cyprus en het noordelijke deel tot Turks Cyprus.

Het gebied rondom Nicosia was oorspronkelijk bewoond door mensen van de Foenicische stam, maar werd later veroverd door de Grieken.
