His successor, Richard Cromwell, had no such advantages, and it is from September 1658 that the Good Old Cause becomes not just a cry of protest but a hunting call. It was for the Good Old Cause that Richard was deposed by the army in May 1659; and it was for the same cause that the army took power from the restored Rump in the following October.
