John Herschel Glenn Jr. ( Cambridge, 18 de julho de 1921 – Columbus, 8 de dezembro de 2016) foi um engenheiro, aviador naval, piloto de teste, astronauta e político norte-americano. Ele foi o terceiro norte-americano a ir ao espaço e o primeiro a orbitar a Terra durante o voo da Mercury-Atlas 6 em 20 de fevereiro de 1962.

13 de jul. de 2023 · Credits: NASA. Glenn, who served four terms as a U.S. senator from Ohio, was one of NASA’s original seven Mercury astronauts. His flight on Friendship 7 on Feb. 20, 1962, showed the world that America was a serious contender in the space race with the Soviet Union. It also made Glenn an instant hero.
He was promoted to the rank of Colonel by the Marine Corps on October 27, 1964 38 and after 23 years of distinguished service to his country, Glenn retired from the Marines on January 1, 1965. 39 In February 1965, he was named as a consultant to the NASA administrator and remained based in Houston, Texas.
