  4. Family tradition has it that one of these helmets was worn by Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Naseby and the other by his son Henry, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, although given their weight they are more likely from two sets of siege armour.

  5. The exhibit bears an inscription at the foot which reads as follows: “Oliver Cromwell’s scutcheon that was taken from his Hearse ye 23rd Nov. 1658.” The whole (background and coat of arms) is painted on silk.
