Wellington is best known for leading the Allied army during the Peninsular War (1807-1814), for defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo (18 June 1815) and for serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1828-1830; 1834). Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was an Anglo-Irish soldier and Tory statesman who was one of the leading military and political figures of 19th-century Britain, commanding the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars and serving twice as prime minister. He has frequently been depicted in various cultural media.

Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852) was born in Dublin in 1769 to an aristocratic Anglo-Irish family. In 1781, aged 12, he was sent to school at Eton. But his father’s death that same year threw the family into financial turmoil. Arthur’s mother withdrew him from Eton to be schooled in Belgium and France.
