Though Jane Seymour had given birth to a son, Henry knew that he needed more sons to ensure the succession. His attention turned towards a small German state, Cleves, which might prove a solid Protestant ally.
Published 21st December 2016. Anne was the daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves, and Maria, heiress to the duchies of Julich-Berg. Both duchies were fiefdoms of the Holy Roman Empire, and owed allegiance at the time of Anne’s birth to the Emperor Maximilian I, and subsequently to Charles V. The politics of the Empire shaped Anne’s destiny.
Anne of Cleves is the longest surviving of Henry VIII’s wives, and she not only outlived his other queens, but also the king himself. On July 16, 1557, just months shy of her 42nd birthday, she passed on in her adopted country of England, mostly likely from cancer.

Anne (whose given name was Anna), was probably born in the ancient fortress of Düsseldorf, in the duchy of Cleves-Jülich-Berg, usually shortened to ‘Cleves’. The duchy had been created by the marriage of Anne’s mother, Maria, Duchess of Jülich-Berg, and her father, Johann III, Duke of Cleves, and the states were formally united in 1521 when Anne’s paternal grandfather died.
