Zukanican are noted for their improvised live performances and have been compared to, amongst other acts, Sun Ra, Soft Machine and Can, and have also acted as Damo Suzuki's sound carriers on several occasions. Liverpool's combo Zukanican wed free-jazz (saxophone, trumpet, bass and drums) droning minimalism (a drone-producing hydrophone) and prog-rock in a carnival-like atmosphere on the mini-album E 5number (2003) and especially Horse Republic (Pickled Egg, 2006), like a meeting of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Frank Zappa and Brian Eno.
