[State Library of Western Australia] Winnie’s plan was to ride a new 1950 Royal Enfield Bullet 350, but she didn’t have the ready cash, so approached the local dealer – Carlyle & Co – for sponsorship.
5,504 miles, from Perth to Sydney and back, on a 350 Bullet. With this expedition, Winifred ‘Winnie’ Wells became the first woman to ride from one side of the Australian continent to another. In the process, Winnie crossed the 1000 mile, mostly uninhabited desert of the Nullabor Plains, a great achievement by itself. Ground-breaking.
Winifred Wells. Winifred Wells was a courtier at the Stuart Restoration court as a Maid of Honour to Queen consort Catherine of Braganza. She was also one of the many mistresses of King Charles II of England. [1] Samuel Pepys refers to her as the King's mistress in his diary, and she also features in Philibert de Gramont 's famous Mémoirs .
