Career. At Oxford. After the Third Siege of Oxford had resulted in the garrison surrendering to the parliamentarians on 24 June 1646, Petty arrived in the town and was offered a fellowship at Brasenose College and studied medicine at the University.

Explore the History of the Lansdowne Family. The Fitzmaurices, of Norman origin, settled in Ireland in the Twelfth century. In 1692, the marriage of Thomas Fitzmaurice and Anne Petty, the only daughter of the scientist and philosopher, Sir William Petty (1623-1687) transformed the family fortunes.
Shelburne was born William Fitzmaurice in Dublin in 1737. His family was part of the Anglo-Irish elite. He is one of only two Irish born British Prime Ministers (the other being the Duke of Wellington). His childhood was spent in Southern Ireland and he was educated at Christ Church, Oxford.
