William Petty Fitzmaurice, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, KG, PC (2 May 1737 – 7 May 1805; known as the Earl of Shelburne between 1761 and 1784, by which title he is generally known to history), was an Anglo-Irish Whig statesman who was the first home secretary in 1782 and then prime minister in 1782-83 during the final months of the American War of Independence.

Sir William Petty FRS (26 May 1623 – 16 December 1687) was an English economist, physician, scientist and philosopher. He first became prominent serving Oliver Cromwell and the Commonwealth in Ireland. He developed efficient methods to survey the land that was to be confiscated and given to Cromwell's soldiers.
The Fitzmaurices, of Norman origin, settled in Ireland in the Twelfth century. In 1692, the marriage of Thomas Fitzmaurice and Anne Petty, the only daughter of the scientist and philosopher, Sir William Petty (1623-1687) transformed the family fortunes. In 1751 their son, John Fitzmaurice (1706-1761) legally changed his name to Petty.
Geoghegan, Patrick M. Petty, William (1737–1805), 2nd earl of Shelburne and British prime minister, was born 2 May 1737 in Dublin, eldest son of John Petty (formerly Fitzmaurice), 1st earl of Shelburne, and Mary Petty (née Fitzmaurice). Embittered by a miserable childhood, he later blamed it for many of his subsequent problems.
