Wilfred Pickles was a radio announcer who broke the tradition of Received Pronunciation on the BBC during World War II. He spoke in his native Yorkshire accent, which was seen as a way to confuse Nazi propagandists and unite the country in its diversity.
Wilfred Pickles was a Yorkshire-born actor and comedian who worked on radio, stage and screen from 1931. He was known for his roles in Billy Liar, For the Love of Ada and The Family Way, and was awarded the OBE in 1950.
