William Edward Burghardt Du Bois ( / djuːˈbɔɪs / dew-BOYSS; [1] [2] February 23, 1868 – August 27, 1963) was an American sociologist, socialist, historian, and Pan-Africanist civil rights activist . Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a relatively tolerant and integrated community.

He was the most important Black protest leader in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. His collection of essays The Souls of Black Folk (1903) is a landmark of African American literature.

He was an early champion of using data to solve social issues for the Black community, and his writing—including his groundbreaking The Souls of Black Folk —became required reading in African American studies. He also led the Niagara Movement and the NAACP, and was a progressive and left-wing activist.
