Our Colleges. Our Colleges are at the heart of life at Durham. From day-to-day activities to special events, there are so many ways to make friends and have fun, while increasing your skills and experience. Colleges are mixed communities of staff and students from all our subject areas.
University College or “Castle” is a thriving living community within Durham University. We have some 750 undergraduates and 700 postgraduates, and 300 members of University staff are attached to the College through the Senior Common Room.
Durham University has 17 colleges, of which University College is the oldest, founded in 1832. The newest college is South, founded in 2020. The last single-sex college, St Mary's, became mixed in 2005 with the admittance of male undergraduates. One college, Ustinov, admits only postgraduates .
