  5. University College or Castle as we are lovingly known is a thriving community within Durham University. We have around 1100 undergraduates and 400 postgraduates and members of University staff are attached to the College through our Senior Common Room.

  6. Durham University has 17 colleges, of which University College is the oldest, founded in 1832. The newest college is South, founded in 2020. The last single-sex college, St Mary's, became mixed in 2005 with the admittance of male undergraduates. One college, Ustinov, admits only postgraduates .

  7. Durham subjects in world top 100. Our departments are rated among the best in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. We have three subjects in the global top 10, ten in the top 50, and 19 in the top 100.
