Evidence from a fossil of Boxgrove Man ( Homo heidelbergensis) shows that Sussex has been inhabited for at least 500,000 years. It is thought to be the oldest human fossil ever discovered in Britain.

He was appointed as Governor General of Canada in 1911 by his nephew, King George V, on the recommendation of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom H. H. Asquith, to replace Earl Grey as viceroy, occupying the post until succeeded by the Duke of Devonshire in 1916.
