Thomas Hardy was born in a cottage in Higher Bockhampton, near Dorchester, on 2 June 1840. He was educated locally and at sixteen was articled to a Dorchester architect, John Hicks. In 1862 he moved to London and found employment with another architect, Arthur Blomfield. He now began to write poetry and published an essay.

26 de jun. de 2019 · Introduction. Thomas Hardy was born in Lower Bockhampton, Dorset, in 1840 and, with brief interruptions, continued to live in and around Dorchester until his death in 1928. His work was intimately linked to the “half-real, half-dream country” of Wessex, a fictionalized version of England’s rural South West.
Thomas Hardy, nascido em junho de 1840 e falecido em janeiro de 1928, é considerado um escritor realista do período vitoriano, ainda que ele tenha sido influenciado enormemente pelo período romântico. Hardy publicou 18 romances, além de contos e poesia, e seu tema central é o declínio da sociedade rural inglesa de fins do século XIX.
Thomas Hardy was born in Dorset, England, in June 1840. His first novel, The Poor Man and the Lady, was finished in 1868 but was turned down by publishers. He married Emma Lavinia Gifford in 1874. Two of Hardy’s most important novels, Jude the Obscure and Tess of the d’Urbervilles were published in 1891 and 1895. He died on January 11, 1928.
