The War of the Volcanoes (Italian original title La guerra dei vulcani) is a 2012 documentary film directed by Francesco Patierno detailing the filming of Roberto Rossellini's 1950 film Stromboli starring Ingrid Bergman and the 1950 film Volcano starring Anna Magnani.

In 1948, a fan letter arrived for director Roberto Rossellini from Ingrid Bergman, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars; after a meeting in New York, Rossellini invited Bergman to Italy to work on a project. Meanwhile, Anna Magnani, one of Italy’s biggest stars and Rossellini’s longtime lover, was furious.
He worked as a production designer and director for some programs at RAI television and then began to work on documentaries, music videos and commercials. He directed the short film That Day (1996) and the feature films Pater Familias (2002) The Early Bird Catches the Worm (2007) and Things of the Other World (2010).
The Aeolian Islands become the centre of the world when competing film productions arrive to shoot Robert Rossellini’s Stromboli, starring his new soon-to-be wife, Ingrid Bergman and William Dieterle’s Volcano, starring Rossellini’s recently jilted ex-lover, Anna Magnani.
