The Old Man of Lochnagar is a 1980 children's book written by then-Prince of Wales and future King Charles III, and illustrated by Sir Hugh Casson. The story revolves around an old man who lives in a cave in the cliffs surrounding the corrie loch under the Lochnagar , a mountain which overlooks the royal estate at Balmoral in Scotland where the Royal Family spend much of their summer holidays.
Lochnagar is one of the most celebrated of the Munros, a pointed summit rising high above one of Scotland's most beautiful corries. It was also featured in a poem by Lord Byron, ending with the following lines:England thy beauties are tame and domesticTo one who has roved on the mountains afarOh! For the crags that are wild and magesticThe steep frowning glories of dark Lochnagar.
