The brainchild of Edward, The Queen's youngest child, it had the best of intentions as a charity fundraiser. But it was doomed from the beginning.

The Grand Knockout Tournament was the brainchild of Prince Edward and marked his first attempt at television production. Whilst the tournament took place on the main lawns of Alton Towers, the amusement park did not feature in the broadcast.
The aftermath of The Grand Knockout Tournament got a bit of a bad rap (quite unfairly I think) when it screened. Here you had a host of members of the Royal Family gamely and bravely participating in the special royal version of It's a Knockout, and good on them for raising money for charity.
The Grand Knockout Tournament (colloquially also known as It's a Royal Knockout) was a one-off charity event which was shown on British television on 19 June 1987. It followed the format of It's a Knockout, a slapstick TV gameshow which was broadcast in the UK until 1982.
