But what is the “Club of Queer Trades”? Well, that would be giving too much away. This is detective fiction, after all. But we can still say that one of the clubs, the Adventure and Romance Agency, which fulfills “the desire for a larger theatre of events,” sounds like the inspiration for the premise of Fantasy Island.
G. K. Chesterton The Club of Queer Trades This excellent half-parody of the detective story (particularly of the Sherlock Holmes stories) is a good introduction to the whimsical, off-beat style of G. K. Chesterton, one of the most unusual authors of British detective fiction of the late 19th and early 20th century.
