The Tashkent Islamic Institute named after Imam Bukhari was established in 1969. It is under the supervision of the Administration of Muslims of Uzbekistan. It was rebuilt by the resolution of the Council for Religious Affairs under the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union on opening a higher-level madrasa in Tashkent.
Today the Tashkent Islamic Institute trains annually up to 200 students: upon graduation the young men and women work not only in religious, but also in secular institutions. The educational program of the Institute was agreed with the Committee on Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Higher Education.
The complex was built near the burial place of the first Tashkent Imam – Kaffal ash Shashi, who was a scholar and religious figure. The complex consists of Tillya Sheikh mosque, Abu Bakr Kaffal Shashi Mausoleum, Barak Khan madrasah and Imam al-Bukhari Islamic Institute.
