  1. Sydney Parkinson - self-portrait. Sydney Parkinson (c. 1745 – 26 January 1771) was a Scottish botanical illustrator and natural history artist. He was the first European artist to visit Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. Parkinson was the first Quaker to visit New Zealand.

  4. The artist’s impressions. Despite his early death, Sydney Parkinson made a great contribution to the records of the Endeavour voyage, being the first European artist to create drawings of Australia’s indigenous people, as well as Australian landscapes, from direct observation.

  5. Sydney Parkinson made over 1,000 drawings during the voyage and these, along with his observations, have proved invaluable to the study of the natural history and anthropology of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific in the eighteenth century.
