The Surry County Regiment was established on August 26, 1775 by the North Carolina Provincial Congress. The regiment was engaged in battles and skirmishes against the British and Cherokee during the American Revolution in North Carolina, South Carolina Tennessee, and Georgia between 1776 and 1782.

Brief History of the Regiment: On September 9, 1775, the Provincial Congress authorized thirty-five (35) existing county Militias to be organized. All officers were appointed and commissioned by the Provincial Congress. The Surry County Regiment was active until the end of the war.
The units included military district brigades established in 1776, county regiments, four battalions, and one independent corps of light horse. Four regiments were located in counties that became part of the Southwest Territory in 1790 and later Tennessee in 1796.

In 1775, Benjamin Herndon was commissioned as a Lieutenant under Capt. John Hamlin and Col. Martin Armstrong in the Surry County Regiment of Militia. This company was at the battle of Moore's Creek Bridge on 2/27/1776.
