Casou-se em Hildburghausen em 6 de março de 1776, aos dezesseis anos de idade, com Francisco, Duque de Saxe-Coburgo-Saalfeld, herdeiro e, mais tarde, duque soberano de Saxe-Coburgo-Saalfeld. À época, Francisco já era apaixonado por aquela que seria sua segunda esposa, a condessa Augusta Reuss-Ebersdorf, mas não teve coragem de romper o noivado com Sofia.

Amália Catarina de Waldeck-Eisenberg. Sofia Albertina de Erbach-Erbach (em alemão: Sophia Albertine; Erbach, 30 de julho de 1683 — Eisfeld, 4 de setembro de 1742) foi uma nobre alemã que se tornou duquesa-consorte de Saxe-Hildburghausen. Entre 1724 e 1728 foi também regente desse estado.
Sophia Charlotte was born on 19 May 1744. She was the youngest daughter of Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg, Prince of Mirow (1708–1752), and his wife Princess Elisabeth Albertine of Saxe-Hildburghausen (1713–1761). Mecklenburg-Strelitz was a small north-German duchy in the Holy Roman Empire.
Sophie was born on 22 February 1760. She was the daughter of Duke Ernest Frederick III of Saxe-Hildburghausen (1727–1780) and Princess Ernestine of Saxe-Weimar (1740–1786). Her godparents were the Danish royal couple, the King of Poland, and the Regents of the houses of Saxe-Coburg, Saxe-Weimar, Mecklenburg and Württemberg.
Saxe-Hildburghausen ( German: Sachsen-Hildburghausen) was an Ernestine duchy and Imperial Estate of the Holy Roman Empire in the southern side of the present State of Thuringia in Germany. Ses parrains sont le couple royal danois, le roi de Pologne, et les régents des maisons de Saxe-Cobourg, de Saxe-Weimar, de Mecklembourg et de Wurtemberg.
