Of modest family origins, he established a lucrative private practice and served as Governor of Guy's Hospital, Fullerian Professor of Physiology and President of the Clinical Society.

He also conducted studies on the spinal cord and helped to expand the state of neurological knowledge on disorders such as paraplegia and syringomyelia [ 1 ]. He also contributed to medical science with regards to thyroid gland-related mental deficiency and glomerulonephritis.

Sir William Gull, who lived from 31st December 1816 - 29th January 1890, is an unlikely suspect for the Jack the Ripper killings, but his name has been suggested nonetheless.
William Withey Gull studied paraplegia, anorexia, and hormones as a physician in England during the nineteenth century. In addition to caring for patients, he described the role of the posterior column of the spinal cord in paraplegia, and he was among the first to describe the conditions of anorexia and of hypochondria.
