Silas Marner foi o terceiro romance publicado por Eliot. Ela decidiu voltar a escrever sobre a Inglaterra rural dos últimos anos do século XVIII e início do XIX enquanto ela ainda trabalhava no grandioso Romola , publicado em série na revista Cornhill Magazine entre Julho de 1862 e Agosto de 1863, e que se passa na Florença do século XV.

Silas Marner’s early faith is distinctly different from the faith he regains in later years.

Silas Marner is to a certain extent a historical novel — that is, the setting is a time already past when the book was written, "the days when the spinning-wheels hummed busily in the farmhouses." However, Eliot is being ironic in saying that the book will express a state of mind "no longer to be found," meaning the distrust of strangers, the extreme provincialism of the villagers of that time.
