It is headquartered in Neartown, Houston, Texas, and operates secondary corporate offices in Jefferson, Louisiana (near New Orleans). SCI operates more than 1500 funeral homes and 400 cemeteries.

Service Corporation International was founded by Robert L. Waltrip, a Houston funeral director. Waltrip was born in 1931 and grew up in an apartment above his family's funeral parlor. He took over the business at the age of 20, when his father died.
