13 de abr. de 2021 · Heaney, Seamus Justin (1939–2013), poet, critic and translator, was born on 13 April 1939 on a farm called Mossbawn in the townland of Tamniarn near Castledawson, Co. Derry, the eldest of nine children (seven sons and two daughters) of Patrick Heaney, farmer and cattle-dealer, and his wife Margaret Kathleen (née McCann).
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Seamus Heaney’s international reputation grew. His work gained a devoted readership in the US in particular, where, from 1982 onwards, he spent four months every year teaching at Harvard University. As his work was translated into other languages, he also found a readership beyond the English-speaking world.

Seamus Heaney was also an accomplished translator. His 1999 version of the Old English epic poem Beowulf became an international bestseller. Other works include translations from Middle Irish, such as Sweeney Astray and The Midnight Verdict (published by The Gallery Press, run by his friend Peter Fallon) and a limited edition of late translations of the work of Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli.
Leben. Seamus Heaney stammte als erstes Kind von neun Kindern aus einer katholischen Bauernfamilie; der Vater handelte mit Vieh. Nach der überkonfessionellen Elementarschule von Anahorish in Toomebridge besuchte Heaney von 1951 bis 1957 mit einem Stipendium die katholische Internatsschule St. Columb’s College in Londonderry, wo er Latein und die Irische Sprache erlernte.
