He was known for his power and patience at the plate, his humanitarian and chef work, and his role in the early-franchise histories of the Astros and the Expos. He was a six-time All-Star and a fan favorite in Montreal, New York and Detroit.

Instantly recognizable for his fiery orange hair and gregarious personality, the outfielder who charmed baseball fans in the United States and Canada during an All-Star career that spanned 23 major league seasons died Thursday. He was 73.
