Santo broke Eddie Mathews' NL record of 369 career double plays at third base in 1972, and in 1973 he broke Mathews' league records of 4,284 assists and 6,606 total chances. Schmidt passed Santo's record for double plays in 1986, his record for assists in 1987, and his mark for total chances in 1988.

Ron Santo was a star third baseman for the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, who played 14 years in the big leagues and one for the White Sox. He batted .277 with 342 home runs, 1,331 RBI and 1,108 walks. He also led the NL in assists, double plays and chances accepted at third base. He died in 2010 at age 70.

Ron Santo was a Hall of Fame third baseman for the Chicago Cubs from 1960 to 1973. He won six NL Gold Gloves, three NL Player of the Month awards, and hit 342 home runs in his career.
