Robin Cope Hartshorne (/ ˈ h ɑːr t s. h ɔːr n / HARTS-horn; born March 15, 1938) is an American mathematician who is known for his work in algebraic geometry. Career. Hartshorne was a Putnam Fellow in Fall 1958 while he was an undergraduate at Harvard University (under the name Robert C. Hartshorne).

About this book. Robin Hartshorne studied algebraic geometry with Oscar Zariski and David Mumford at Harvard, and with J.-P. Serre and A. Grothendieck in Paris. After receiving his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1963, Hartshorne became a Junior Fellow at Harvard, then taught there for several years.

Robin Hartshorne began his training in geometry with a course in mechanical drawing in the fifth grade, where he learned about ruler and compass constructions. Later, with a Harvard AB and a Princeton PhD, he was fortunate to study algebraic geometry in Cambridge and Paris at a time when the new techniques of schemes and cohomology were being developed.
