  4. PEEL, ROBERT (1788–1850), English politician. Robert Peel was born in Bury, Lancashire, the son of Robert Peel, a wealthy calico manufacturer and landowner, and Ellen Yates. Peel spent his formative years in Lancashire before the family removed in 1796 to Tamworth, Staffordshire, where his father had purchased an estate and become the local member of Parliament (MP).
