Robert Anderson Van Wyck (1849-1918) was the first Mayor to take office after the consolidation of the City of New York in 1898. Educated in North Carolina and at Columbia University, Van Wyck was a businessman before becoming a successful attorney.
Robert Anderson Van Wyck (20 July 1849-14 November 1918) was the Democratic Mayor of New York City from 1 January 1898 to 31 December 1901, succeeding William Lafayette Strong and preceding Seth Low.
The first mayor to lead the new “Greater New York” was Robert Anderson Van Wyck 1872CC, a Tammany Hall favorite whose political career flamed out in 1901 in a stock scandal. Van Wyck’s successor was another Columbian — Seth Low 1870CC, 1914HON, the president of Columbia, who had also been mayor of Brooklyn in the 1880s.
