Details. Geoffrey Rush stars in this darkly provocative thriller about the imagined final days of the lascivious Marquis de Sade and his battles with those who seek to silence his writings.
Directed by Philip Kaufman. There are no bad words… only bad deeds. A nobleman with a literary flair, the Marquis de Sade lives in a madhouse where a beautiful laundry maid smuggles his erotic stories to a printer, defying orders from the asylum’s resident priest.
[5] Plot. In Paris, during the Reign of Terror, the incarcerated Marquis de Sade pens a story about Mademoiselle Renard, a young aristocrat who meets him. Years later, the Marquis is confined to the asylum for the insane at Charenton, overseen by the Abbé du Coulmier.
