  1. Johann Philipp Reis ( German: [ʁaɪs]; 7 January 1834 – 14 January 1874) was a self-taught German scientist and inventor. In 1861, he constructed the first make-and-break telephone, today called the Reis telephone. It was the first device to transmit a voice via electronic signals and for that the first modern telephone.

  5. Philipp Reis was born in 1834 and was the science master of Institut Garnier, a large boarding school for boys in the village of Friedrichsdorf, near Frankfurt in Germany. In 1860 he invented the telephone while working for the school and exhibited the instrument at a meeting of the Physical Society at Frankfurt in 1861.
