Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th earl of Chesterfield, was a British statesman, diplomat, and wit, chiefly remembered as the author of Letters to His Son and Letters to His Godson—guides to manners, the art of pleasing, and the art of worldly success. Chesterfield was born on September 22, 1694, in London, England.
He was Colonel of a regiment of foot (1667, 1682), a Privy Councillor (1681) and the Warden of the royal forests south of Trent (1679). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in November 1708. [1] [4] He died at his home in Middlesex, and was buried in Shelford, Nottinghamshire.
