The early population of Irish immigrants in Australia bore many tales of dogged determination for social progress, but one man, Paddy Hannan, left his legacy literally etched into the landscape. His is a story of risk and reward, of controversy and of colonialism. Born Quin, County Clare, in 1840, Hannan entered a world of limited prospects.
Patrick Hannan (baptised 26 April 1840 – 4 November 1925) was a gold prospector whose lucrative discovery on 14 June 1893 set off a major gold rush in the area now known as Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia. The resulting goldfield has been mined ever since and is renowned as The Golden Mile, the richest square mile in the world.
Patrick Hannan MBE (26 September 1941 – 11 October 2009) [1] was a Welsh political journalist, author and television and radio presenter. [2] The son of an Irish doctor who migrated to Wales in the 1930s, he was born and raised in Aberaman, near Aberdare in South Wales.
