Overview. 1908: Pascali, a spy for the Sultan, sends reports to Istanbul that nobody reads. His suspicions are roused when a British archaeologist appears, who may not be quite what he seems. James Dearden.
On a Greek island a stranger (Charles Dance) arrives in the guise of an archeologist, whereby local man Pascali (Ben Kingsley) befriends him with consequences to follow. Helen Mirren adds to the wonderful cast with a movie filmed by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins.
There is a bittersweet loneliness in the life of an exile that exerts a romantic appeal to many people. They see themselves as a mysterious figure on a Mediterranean island, seen by all, known to few, living a life of intense privacy in full view.
