True, Otto had no Nazi Party affiliation; he lived most of his adult life in the United States, as a quiet entomologist with a specialty in bees. But he was also a strict, humorless German man born in 1885.

Her mother, Aurelia Schober, was a master’s student at Boston University when she met Plath’s father, Otto Plath, who was her professor. They were married in January of 1932.
