BENNETT AND MRS. BROWN' IT seems to me possible, perhaps desirable, that I may be the only person in this room who has committed the folly of writing, trying to write, or failing to write, a novel.
‘Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown’ is an important exploration of modernism by Virginia Woolf. This edition of the essay was published on 30 October 1924 by the Hogarth Press. It is the first number within the first Hogarth Essays series, which ran from 1924 to 1926.
“Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown” is written as a polemical answer to Arnold Bennett’s claim that the novel is in crisis due to the failure of Georgian novelists in the art of “character-making” which he finds crucial for successful novel-writing.

Woolf doesn’t spell out what exactly happened in December 1910 to make this sea-change occur, so we as readers are left to pick over this provocative statement.
