Ney fait preuve d'un immense courage tout au long de la Révolution et de l'Empire mais ne possède aucun talent stratégique. "Girouette" politique en 1814-1815, il pousse Napoléon à abdiquer et se rallie à Louis XVIII puis de nouveau à l'Empereur au retour de l'île d'Elbe, avant de devenir l'un des responsables de la défaite de Waterloo.

Called the “bravest of the brave”, he was one of Napoleon’s most popular officers, the very picture of a dashing cavalry commander. After Napoleon’s final exile, he was executed by the French court.
Ney led the Grande Armée's VI Corps against the Third Coalition in 1805. After the débâcle of Albeck in October, which triggered a lifelong feud with Murat, he redeemed himself with a brilliant performance at Elchingen a few days later, but missed the triumph at Austerlitz after leading his corps into the Tyrol to block Archduke John's Austrian army.

Since Michel Ney had been named a French Peer by Louis XVIII in 1814, he demanded, according to his right, to be judged by the Chamber of Peers after the war tribunal declared itself unable to pass judgement. The Marshal, who with his lawyers and friends feared reprisals for old grudges, celebrated when his request was granted.
