Michael Howard is a British politician who served as Leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Opposition from November 2003 to December 2005. He was a former Minister in Margaret Thatcher and John Major's governments, and a Shadow Cabinet member. He was born in Swansea to a Jewish family, his father from Romania and his mother from Wales.

Michael Howard was an English military historian, former professor of war studies at King's College London and the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He wrote about the Franco-Prussian War, the Second World War, and the sociological significance of war. He was knighted in 1986 and received the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2002.
