Mary Stuart nasceu no Castelo de Linlithgow, na Escócia, em 8 de dezembro de 1542. Ela era filha do rei James V da Escócia e tinha apenas seis dias quando o pai morreu. Her two older brothers died before she was born, placing her in line to inherit James's throne. The king, bitterly disappointed at the birth of a daughter, died before the baby was a week old.
