Mary Pennington (Updike) Weatherall (January 26, 1930 - February 25, 2018) was a visual artist and the first wife of John Updike. Many of Updike's early characters were modeled after her, particularly in his short stories about the Maple family and his novel Couples.
25 de fev. de 2018 · All of us at The John Updike Society were saddened to see the notice that Michael Updike just posted on Facebook that his mother, Mary Pennington (Updike) Weatherall, has died. Mary, John Updike’s first wife and the mother of his four children, was a supporter of the society from the very beginning.
6 de mar. de 2018 · Mary Pennington was a fine arts major at Radcliffe College when she first encountered Updike, a Harvard College student. They met in a medieval art class at the Fogg Museum in fall 1951, and in the spring they took a drawing class from Boston artist Hyman Bloom.

Artist Mary Pennington Updike Weatherall, daughter of Elizabeth Entwistle Daniels and Reverend Leslie Talbot Pennington, was born January 26, 1930. She graduated in 1952 from Radcliffe College, where she met her first husband, author John Updike.
