Martin Hellman received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1969. From 1968-1969, he was at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. From 1969 to 1971, he was an Assistant Professor at MIT. He then became an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, doing research in cryptography and information theory.

Hellman is a longtime contributor to the computer privacy debate, and has applied risk analysis to a potential failure of nuclear deterrence.
