The other rumour, that 'Madge' Shelton might become Henry's wife in 1538, appears in one of the Lisle Letters. Uncertainty over the date of Mary's birth means she could have been as young as fifteen when she began her affair with King Henry VIII. Their affair together was short-lived, only lasting about six months.

Either older sister of Lady Margaret (or Madge) Shelton, who was lady in waiting to Anne Boleyn and briefly a mistress to Henry VIII, or else people have misread Madge Shelton in certain sources and Margaret/Mary Shelton are the same person – apparently some scholars disagree on this.

The preponderance of evidence indicates it was Mary and she became Henry VIII’s mistress for about six months in 1534-35, causing friction between Queen Anne Boleyn and Lady Shelton.

Madge came to court as a maid of honor to her cousin, Queen Anne around 1535. It is commonly believed that Madge Shelton had a brief affair with Henry VIII while he was married to her cousin.
