Biography of Lord William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck (1774-1839; M.P. and Governor General of India) Lord William Bentinck was born in London, the second son of the 3rd Duke of Portland. He was educated at Rev. Dr Samuel Goodenough's school in Ealing, before moving on to Westminster School.
Political career William Henry Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 4th Duke of Portland, as a child Portland was Member of Parliament for Petersfield between 1790 and 1791 and for Buckinghamshire between 1791 and 1809.  He served under his father as a Lord of the Treasury between March and September 1807.
He was master of the fox hounds for the Rufford Hunt between 1834 and 1836 and master of the Burton Hunt from 1842-1862. Despite an initial reluctance, he was drawn into politics in 1846 when his brother, Lord George Bentinck, was leading the Protectionist opposition to Sir Robert Peel.
