Sir William Cecil, Lord Burghley was the longest-serving minister of any of the Tudor monarchs, and one of the more successful in that he died in his own bed, still in favour with his sovereign. Cecil was born in a small town in Lincolnshire, into a family with royal connections.

Sprung from a comfortably-off country gentry family with connections at court, Cecil had made his way up originally as personal secretary to Protector Somerset after Henry VIII's death.
Cecil held the highest offices of state as Principal Secretary and Lord Treasurer continuously until his death in 1598. Cecil was the most powerful man in England for almost the entire length of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign. A power not derived from the church, nor from the battlefield nor from ancient lineage.

He augmented the original courtyard house, in a construction project which began in 1564. Originally, it was intended to be a relatively ‘small’ home for Burghley’s youngest son and heir, Robert Cecil.
