Seeing how the guerilla war is so much more efficient, I don’t see how they could think “yeah I’m going to put all my army in the open field without cover, and it’s going to work”, same for the soldiers, being in the first line was basically a death sentence. To sum up how such madness could’ve stayed the norm for so long ?
