As the architect of the club, Thomas was credited with building the roster that captured the National League pennant in 1993, one year after they finished in last.

He played for six teams from 1961 to 1968. He played for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros.
After being stuck in the New York Yankees minor-league system for seven seasons, Lee Thomas spent 1961 through 1968 as a big-league player. The first baseman/outfielder was an All-Star in his best year, 1962 – but his finest day came in the final month of his rookie season.
